History of North America

British King James I granted the Virginia Company of London a charter. North American connections to Joan of Arc (1412-31) span across literature, monuments, and wartime campaigns. The inspired heroine has deeply influenced American culture. While Joan died centuries before Canada was colonized, her legacy as a symbol of faith, language, and cultural resilience remains a strong historical thread in the country with connections deeply rooted in Quebec's French-Canadian cultural identity, spanning monumental art, religious architecture, and media. Although Saint Joan is a distinctly 15th-century icon, her archetype of the young, spiritual, and rebellious warrior has also deeply influenced Mexican culture, history, and folklore.

A series of 16 influential political pamphlets published between 1776 and 1783 during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) titled The American Crisis, or simply The Crisis, by eighteenth-century Enlightenment philosopher and author Thomas Paine — an Englishman living in the colonies who signed his essays anonymously as "Common Sense," the title of his earlier influential work. Each essay, bolstered the morale of the American colonists to fight hard for their independence, appealed to the English to support the colonist's cause, clarified the issues at stake, and denounced any type of negotiated peace. The essays were gathered into one volume in 1882, showcasing the iconic opening line: "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."

The first Monday of September is Labor Day, so let's examine the practice of importing workers from France and England to North America as a profitable business during early colonial times. To satisfy the continent’s need for labor, agreements between two parties about long-term work gained popularity. The length of servitude might be a specified number of years or until the laborer reached a certain age. Many people indentured themselves in order to gain passage to North America or to escape debt and poverty.
