361: Career Reset in Seconds: Rebuilding Confidence, Identity, and Your Next Step with Joe Mazzarello
11/08/2026 | 29 minSend us Fan Mail
A routine day at work can change your career and your life in seconds. In this episode of The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, I’m joined by Joe Mazzarello, whose story is both intense and deeply instructive for any mid-career professional navigating change, uncertainty, or a career pivot.
Please take care as you listen. This episode includes a brief discussion of a serious workplace injury, surgeries, recovery, and rehabilitation.
Joe spent years working as an elevator mechanic. Then, during what seemed like a normal workday, a split-second slip pulled his left arm into a running machine. Joe walks me through what happened, the shock of the accident, and the long road that followed, including surgeries, occupational therapy, and learning how to live and work with new physical limitations.
But this conversation is not only about recovery. It is about identity, resilience, career reinvention, and what it takes to move forward when the version of your career you once knew no longer fits.
Joe shares how he moved to Ohio during his recovery, started taking on small handyman jobs, and eventually built those jobs into a residential remodeling and renovation business. His story offers a powerful reminder for mid-career professionals who feel stuck, overlooked, or uncertain about their next move: you do not have to wait until you feel completely ready to take the next step.
In this episode, Joe and I talk about how to rebuild confidence, tell your story, stop managing other people’s reactions, and let your actions prove what you are capable of doing. Whether you are navigating a career change, rebuilding after a setback, preparing for interviews, or trying to find more meaning in your work, this conversation will help you think differently about fear, gratitude, mistakes, and momentum.
In This Episode, You’ll Learn:
How a routine job became a life-changing accident for Joe
What recovery taught Joe about identity, confidence, and resilience
Why career pivots often begin before you feel ready
How Joe turned small handyman jobs into a residential remodeling business
Why adapting to new limitations can create new opportunities
How to tell your story in interviews, networking conversations, and client meetings
Why you cannot control how other people receive your story
How choosing the uncomfortable path can help you grow faster
Why mistakes can become one of your best teachers
How gratitude and realism can exist at the same time
Why taking action matters more than waiting for certainty
Why This Episode Matters for Mid-Career Professionals
Mid-career change does not always arrive neatly. Sometimes it shows up through a layoff, a missed promotion, a bad boss, a stalled job search, a personal transition, or an unexpected life event that forces you to reconsider what work means to you.
Joe’s story is a powerful example of what it looks like to rebuild when the old path no longer works. For mid-career professionals, that message matters. You may not be recovering from a workplace injury, but you may be recovering from disappointment, rejection, self-doubt, or a version of your career that no longer feels aligned.
This episode will help you ask better questions about your career, including:
What story am I telling myself about what I can and cannot do?
Where am I waiting to feel ready before I take action?
What evidence do I already have that I can adapt, learn, and grow?
What would change if I stopped trying to control other people’s reactions and started owning my story more fully?
Joe’s journey reminds us that building your Mid-Career GPS is not about having every step figured out. It is about taking the next step, learning from what happens, and trusting that progress often comes from action.
Memorable Ideas from the Conversation
One of the strongest messages Joe shares is that mistakes are your friend. That is a powerful shift for anyone in a job search, career pivot, or leadership transition. Too many mid-career professionals wait for the perfect plan, the perfect resume, the perfect answer, or the perfect timing. Joe’s story challenges that thinking.
He reminds us that action creates clarity.
He also shares why telling your story matters. Whether you are interviewing for a new role, networking with someone in your industry, talking with a potential client, or trying to build credibility in a new field, your story can become one of your greatest assets. But only if you are willing to tell it.
Listen to This Episode If You Are:
Considering a career pivot or career change
Rebuilding confidence after a professional or personal setback
Feeling stuck in your current job or career path
Trying to find clarity about what comes next
Preparing for interviews and wondering how to tell your story
Learning how to lead yourself through uncertainty
Struggling with fear, self-doubt, or perfectionism
Looking for inspiration to take your next step

Final Thoughts
If you are in a season where your career feels uncertain, Joe’s story offers an important reminder: you do not need to have everything figured out before you begin. You can take the next step, learn from what happens, and adjust along the way.
Your career does not have to look the way it used to in order to be meaningful. Sometimes, the next chapter begins when you are willing to own your story, choose the uncomfortable path, and keep moving forward.
Listen to this episode and use it as a reminder that your next step does not have to be perfect. It only has to move you forward.

Your work can’t walk into a leadership meeting and explain what you solved, what changed, or why the team’s results improved. That’s the uncomfortable mid-career truth we’re tackling in this quick bonus drop, along with an invitation to my free live webinar, “Why Doing Good Work is No Longer Enough,” happening Wednesday, August 12 at noon Eastern (with a limited-time replay if you can’t join live).
Register for the webinar here.
I break down why being dependable and delivering strong results still isn’t enough in today’s job market, especially when promotion, compensation, and opportunity decisions get made behind closed doors. We talk about self-advocacy without bragging: communicating your value with evidence, data points, and clear examples that make your impact easy to understand and hard to ignore. If you can’t clearly name the problem you solved, the action you took, and the result that happened because of your leadership, you end up asking others to interpret your value for you. Sometimes they’ll get it right. Sometimes they won’t.
You’ll also hear why I prefer “take command of your narrative” over “control your narrative.” You can’t control restructures or every decision, but you can take responsibility for how you show up, how you build relationships, and how you position yourself for what comes next. I also give you a simple pre-webinar exercise and explain why professional development without action turns into educational entertainment.
If you want stronger career visibility, clearer professional branding, and a realistic path to your next role, subscribe, share this with a friend, and register for the webinar on August 12th.

Most mid-career professionals are not struggling because they lack skill, experience, or dedication. They are struggling because the value they bring is not always clear to the people making decisions about promotions, job offers, and leadership opportunities.
In this episode, I’m talking about one subtle language habit that may be keeping you from being recognized at work: always saying “we” when it is time to say “I.”
If you are a big-hearted, people-first leader, you may have trained yourself to give credit to the team in every update, performance review, networking conversation, and job interview. That humility can build trust, but it can also make your individual leadership hard to see.
There is a difference between bragging and self-advocacy. Bragging makes the story only about you. Self-advocacy helps others understand the value of your leadership, your decisions, your influence, and the measurable results you helped create.
At mid-career, doing good work is no longer enough. You need to be able to clearly communicate your impact.
I’ll walk you through how the “invisibility test” shows up in everyday career conversations, including one-on-ones, performance appraisals, job interviews, and networking conversations. I’ll also share a personal story from my earlier podcast and how feedback helped me realize I was hiding behind the group instead of getting clearer about my message and leadership.
You’ll learn how to honor your team while still owning what happened under your leadership. You’ll also hear how to create a stronger unique professional value statement that begins with “I help” so you can clarify your value on LinkedIn, in interviews, and in conversations with decision makers.
In a competitive job market where hiring decisions feel slower but disqualification happens faster, your ability to articulate your personal impact matters. Leaders and interviewers need to quickly understand what you do, why it matters, and how your leadership creates results.
In This Episode, you'll learn:
• Why always saying “we” may be hurting your visibility at mid-career
• The difference between bragging and self-advocacy
• How to credit your team while still owning your leadership
• Why your impact needs to be clear before promotion decisions are made
• How the invisibility test shows up in one-on-ones and performance reviews
• What my earlier podcast taught me about hiding behind group language
• How to use an “I help” statement to clarify your professional value
• Why job seekers must communicate measurable results quickly in today’s hiring market
Why This Matters for Your Career
If you are feeling overlooked, passed over, or undervalued at work, the problem may not be your performance. It may be how you are telling the story of your performance.
Mid-career professionals often assume their work will speak for itself. But your leaders, stakeholders, and interviewers are busy. They may not always see the strategy, effort, and leadership behind your results unless you make it clear.
This does not mean taking credit away from your team. It means learning how to say:
“I led the process.”
“I influenced the decision.”
“I helped the team move from confusion to clarity.”
“I created the structure that helped us achieve the result.”
“I helped solve the problem by doing this specific thing.”
That kind of language helps others understand your leadership brand and the value you bring.
Career Strategy to Try This Week
This week, look at one career conversation where you usually say “we.” It could be a one-on-one, performance update, LinkedIn profile section, resume bullet, networking introduction, or interview answer.
Ask yourself:
Where is “we” accurate?
Where do I need to say “I”?
What result happened because of my leadership?
What decision, action, or influence did I personally contribute?
How can I communicate that impact with clarity and integrity?
Then practice building your unique professional value statement using this structure:
“I help [audience or organization] achieve [specific result] by [your leadership strength, skill, or approach].”
The clearer you are about your value, the easier it becomes for others to understand why you are ready for the next opportunity.
Listen to This Episode If You Are:
• A mid-career professional who feels overlooked at work
• A manager or leader who struggles to talk about your accomplishments
• A job seeker preparing for interviews in a competitive market
• A high performer who wants to be seen as promotion-ready
• A people-first leader who wants to self-advocate without sounding arrogant
• Someone who wants more clarity around your leadership brand and career story
Final Thought
You can be humble and still be clear.
You can honor the team and still name your leadership.
You can be generous with credit and still make sure decision makers understand your impact.
At this stage of your career, self-advocacy is not optional. It is part of how you lead, grow, and position yourself for the opportunities you want next.
Listen to the full episode and start paying attention to where “we” is helping your leadership story and where “I” may be required.

Promotions can feel deeply personal, especially when you are carrying the workload, delivering results, and still watching someone else move up.
In this episode of The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, I’m asking the question many mid-career professionals have quietly wondered: “How did they get promoted when I’m doing as much or more?”
The answer is rarely “work harder.”
At this stage of your career, hard work matters, but it is not always what gets you promoted. Leaders are often evaluating you through an invisible promotion test that rarely gets explained out loud. They are looking for clear evidence that you can operate at the next level, demonstrate measurable business impact, and lead with the kind of influence, visibility, and strategic thinking expected in a bigger role.
If your work is solid but your impact is unclear, your career may stall. That is why relying on “my work will speak for itself” can quietly hold you back.
In this episode, I break down what decision makers actually need when your name comes up in a promotion conversation. They need examples they can repeat confidently when you are not in the room.
They need proof that you are not just doing more work, but creating outcomes that matter to the organization.
I also talk about the difference between bragging and self-advocacy.
Advocating for yourself is not about arrogance. It is about communicating your value with executive presence, connecting your contributions to business outcomes, and helping your manager understand how to champion you effectively.
You’ll walk away with three practical strategies for career growth and promotion readiness: tracking measurable results, making your promotion goals explicit in your one-on-ones, and giving your manager the exact talking points they need to advocate for you.
I also share four diagnostic questions to help you pressure test whether your supervisor truly understands your impact and can defend your promotion recommendation quickly and clearly.
If you feel stuck, unseen, or frustrated because you are doing the work but not getting promoted, this episode will help you understand what may be missing and how to start positioning yourself more strategically.
In This Episode, You’ll Learn:
• Why summertime workloads can amplify resentment at work
• What it really means to feel stuck and unseen at mid-career
• How leaders evaluate next-level readiness for promotions
• Why visibility and memorable impact stories can change career outcomes
• The difference between arrogance and business-centered advocacy
• Why time in role does not guarantee a promotion
• What strategic thinking and influence without title look like
• Three ways to advocate for yourself without sounding boastful
• Four questions to check whether your supervisor can champion you fast
Why This Matters for Your Mid-Career Growth
At mid-career, your job is not only to do good work. Your job is to make sure the right people understand the value, impact, and strategic importance of that work.
If you are tired of feeling overlooked, passed over, or unsure why your career is not moving forward, this episode will help you stop guessing and start building a stronger case for your next promotion.
Listen to this episode and learn how to make your impact more visible, your goals more explicit, and your promotion story easier for others to repeat.

21/07/2026 | 32 minSend us Fan Mail
You can be the most dependable person in the room and still be quietly falling apart.
Many mid-career professionals have built their reputations by being capable, responsive, and willing to solve difficult problems. But when you become the person everyone relies on, your competence can turn into a trap. More work comes your way, other people’s emergencies become your responsibility, and saying yes becomes almost automatic.
In this episode of The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, I sit down with Tammie Calys, executive reinvention architect and founder of Next Level Me, to discuss what she calls the curse of competence.
After decades of leading corporate strategy and large-scale organizational change, Tammie learned a dangerous truth: high-achieving leaders are often excellent at mitigating risk for their organizations while ignoring the risks to their own capacity, health, relationships, and careers.
We explore the fear, uncertainty, and guilt many mid-career professionals are experiencing in the 2026 job market. You may want a new job or career change, but feel guilty pursuing something better while colleagues are being laid off or displaced. You may also be staying in an unhealthy situation because the uncertainty of leaving feels more frightening than the cost of remaining.
Tammie explains how high performers become the default solution for every workplace problem and why being dependable does not mean you must absorb every new responsibility. She also shares specific boundary-setting scripts that allow you to protect your time and capacity without damaging trust or appearing uncooperative.
You will learn how to use a 24-hour pause to interrupt the reflexive yes, initiate a trade-off conversation that forces meaningful prioritization, and offer alternative solutions without taking ownership of the entire problem.
We also discuss the early warning signs of silent cracking, including phantom presence, when you are physically with the people you care about but remain mentally consumed by work. Tammie explains why remote and hybrid professionals need a deliberate workday shutdown ritual and a transition bridge that helps them move from professional responsibilities into their personal lives.
This conversation is not simply about saying no. It is about leading yourself more intentionally, protecting your professional capacity, and making career decisions before you reach a breaking point.
In This Episode, You Will Learn:
• Why fear and guilt in the 2026 job market keep mid-career professionals stuck
• How the curse of competence turns top performers into the default fix for every problem
• A 24-hour pause script that prevents an automatic yes
• Three ways to say no while remaining supportive and collaborative
• How to use trade-off conversations to help leaders establish real priorities
• Why microhabits and evidence from your own history can strengthen your confidence
• How silent cracking and phantom presence affect your personal relationships
• How to create a workday shutdown ritual for remote and hybrid work
• Why knowing your north star is essential for career clarity and professional reinvention
• How to advocate for yourself before exhaustion, resentment, or burnout forces a decision
Your job may feel secure today, but that does not mean you should leave your career direction entirely in someone else’s hands. Knowing your values, strengths, boundaries, and professional north star helps you make intentional decisions instead of waiting for a crisis.
If this episode helps you recognize where your competence may be working against you, subscribe to The Mid-Career GPS Podcast and share this conversation with a colleague who needs stronger workplace boundaries.
