Church Safety & Security W/The Church Safety Guys

What if one of the biggest mistakes church safety teams make is spending too much time looking for bad guys instead of getting to know the people they are called to protect?

In Episode 3 of Church Safety and Security With the Church Safety Guys, Dr. James P. McGarvey challenges church safety volunteers to rethink their approach to safety and security. Effective church safety isn't about profiling people based on their appearance, clothing, or circumstances. It's about building relationships, understanding normal behavior, recognizing unusual activity, and creating an environment where everyone feels welcome. When safety team members become familiar with their congregation, they are better equipped to recognize when something isn't right.

A ministry-first approach allows volunteers to serve as both protectors and ambassadors of the church. The goal isn't to find someone who looks suspicious. It's to recognize behavior that gives us a reason to be concerned.

One of the biggest mistakes churches make is assuming that someone belongs on the safety team simply because they are a police officer, firefighter, military veteran, or firearms enthusiast. Those backgrounds can be valuable, but they do not automatically make someone a good fit for church safety ministry.
