Bis zur normannischen Eroberung im Jahr 1066, wurde das Gebiet der Angelsachsen zu einem Gebiet reich an einheitlich geprägten Silbermünzen, einer hohen wirtschaftlichen Aktivität und einem zentralen Bestandteil des europäischen Seehandels. Vom Land zum Silber, vom Geschenk zur Steuer, von der Halle zum Markt – das angelsächsische England erlebte einen tiefgreifenden wirtschaftlichen Wandel.
